Get involved

If you are learning about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) for the first time and are wondering if you or someone you care for may be affected, consider these steps:

Ask someone… and don’t stop asking until you get support

If you are learning about FASD for the first time and are wondering if you or someone you care for may be affected by an FASD, ask someone:

  • Ask your ʻohana about alcohol use in the family… no shame, remember it’s a kākou thing.

  • Ask a teacher or other community provider you work with.

If people in your community circles aren’t sure how to help, call your family doctor and ask for an FASD diagnostic referral or consultation, or call your health plan directly.

Alcohol is complicated. Many people don’t know how alcohol affects pregnancy or may have affected a pregnancy. Being kind and curious are the first steps.

  • If you are a physician, mental health clinician, or other social services provider and work with families who may be affected, let them know about FASD. Consider it in the health and wellness planning with all your families.

If you are caring for someone with an FASD diagnosis, or are wondering how to get a diagnosis or support services, call your family doctor or health plan today.

  • If you’re interested in becoming a community trainer or advisory group member, please reach out via email: info@fashawaii.org
